This month marks the one hundred and twenty-fourth anniversary of Nana Dunn’s birth.
Or does it?
Nana’s gravestone says she was born in 1896. But even though that date is, literally, carved in stone, it’s almost certainly wrong.
I haven’t been able to locate a copy of Nana’s birth certificate, but it’s likely that she was actually born in April, 1889. That’s based on the 1900 census form, which also confirms that she was 11 years old on June 14, 1900, the date of that census :
It would be nice if we could check the 1890 census, but those records were, unfortunately, destroyed in a fire in 1921.
